Watch Arabic Tv

A few clicks can give you a freedom of choosing any tv channel you like. My friends told me that many of their current cable or satellite television providers offer them poor variety of their favourite channels from arabic countries. This theme touched me so much that I’ve made a research about it.

After browsing on the internet for about 12 hours and bookmarking websites with related information I was redirected to the webpage about one interesting software.

While doing my research I’ve readed about a way to stream tv online that included an opportunity to watch arabic tv channels. But it was a piece of hardware that was working as a little signal receiver. It is a pci card and it can be connected to the computer via usb. But this opportunity didn’t made any sense to me because it had like 500$ price and I really don’t like to connect anything to my camputers and laptop. These cables and others stuff screws me off so I put this method off.

But let’s return to review that tv streaming program we’ve spoken about. After reading the specifics and reviews of it I decided to buy one and try it out. It was like just 50 bucks and it was worth it because I wanted to help my friends and who knows – maybe I can find something useful for me, too? So, It was 4 a.m. and an easy payment via paypal – bump! – I’m installing this software on my personal computer. Actually my laptop isn’t really powerful and internet connection is about 256k but I had no problem with anything – smooth and easy.

Now the most tasty part is coming up. I’ve opened a program and oh my God – 12,000 channels to choose from! This is a real deal. I remembered that I want to help my friends to watch arabic tv. So I went to the advanced search and there was such a big list of arabic tv channels – it included Dubai One News Tv, Al Jazeera, Iraqaa and many others. I’ve chosen one and it took 3 minutes to buffer and I could watch the channel in a wonderful quality online full screen.

So i told my friends – Yes! you can easily watch arabic tv on your computer! They was so thankful to me for this link.

Dubai News: Facts & News From The Fastest Growing City In The World

The Trucial States of the Persian Gulf coast granted the UK control of their defense and foreign affairs in 19th century treaties. In 1971, six of these states – Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Fujairah, Sharjah, Dubai, and Umm al Quwain – merged to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They were joined in 1972 by Ras Al Khaimah. The UAE’s per capita GDP is on par with those of leading West European nations. Its generosity with oil revenues and its moderate foreign policy stance have allowed the UAE to play a vital role in the affairs of the region.

Location: Middle East, bordering the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf, between Oman and Saudi Arabia.

Area: Total UAE: 83,600 sq km; Dubai: 3,885 sq. km i.e less than 5% of UAE. And 4 times the size of Singapore.

Land boundaries: With Oman 410 km, Saudi Arabia 457 km

Weather: Normally a desert climate. Hottest in July and August when temperatures reach 48 Deg C with RH of around 85%.

Elevation extremes: Lowest point: Persian Gulf 0 m

Highest point: Jabal Yibir 1,527 m

Environment – current issues: Lack of natural freshwater resources compensated by desalination plants; desertification; beach pollution from oil spills.

Environment – international agreements: Party to: Biodiversity, Climate Change, Climate Change-Kyoto Protocol, Desertification, Endangered Species, Hazardous Wastes, Marine Dumping, Ozone Layer Protectionsigned, but not ratified: Law of the Sea

Geography – note: Strategic location along southern approaches to Strait of Hormuz, a vital transit point for world crude oil.

Population Dubai: 1.5 mn 2007E

Age Group 15-64 years [79% of total population]: Male 73% Female: 27%

According to current dubai news, about 80% of Dubai’s population consists of foreigners in the age group between 15 and 64 since visas are normally issued only for working people or investors and people over 60 years need to pay extra to get annual visas instead of 3 year ones. So there are few foreigners in the other age groups.

Ethnic groups: Recent Dubai news indicates that the break up is: Emirati 19%, other Arab and Iranian 23%, South Asian 30%, Westerners and East Asians 28%.

Religion: Muslim 96% (Shi’a 16%), other (includes Christian, Hindu) 4%

Government type: Federation with specified powers delegated to the UAE federal government and other powers reserved to member emirates.

Time difference: GMT+4 (9 hours ahead of Washington, DC during Standard Time)

Independence: 2 December 1971 (from UK), which is a national holiday.

Legal system: Based on a dual system of Shari’a and civil courts; has not accepted compulsory ICJ jurisdiction.

Judicial branch: Union Supreme Court (judges are appointed by the president).

Economy overview: Dubai has an open economy with a high per capita income and a sizable annual trade surplus. Successful efforts at economic diversification, have made oil and gas a small percentage of the total output. Since the discovery of oil in the UAE more than 30 years ago, Dubai has undergone a profound transformation from an impoverished region of small desert principalities to a modern state with a high standard of living.

The government has increased spending on job creation and infrastructure expansion and is opening up utilities to greater private sector involvement. Dubai’s Free Trade Zones – offering 100% foreign ownership and zero taxes – are helping to attract foreign investors. Higher revenue, strong liquidity, housing shortages, and cheap credit in 2005-07 led to a surge in asset prices (shares and real estate) and consumer inflation. Rising prices are increasing the operating costs for businesses in the Dubai and adversely impacting government employees and others on fixed incomes.

GDP (purchasing power parity): 7.3 billion (2007 est.)

GDP (official exchange rate): 2.6 billion (2007 est.)

GDP real growth rate: 7.4% (2007 est.)

Inflation rate (consumer prices): 11% (2007 est.)

Currency (code): Emirati dirham (AED)

Exchange rates: Emirati dirhams per US dollar – 3.673 (2007), 3.673 (2006), 3.6725 (2005), 3.6725 (2004), 3.6725 (2003)note: officially pegged to the US dollar since February 2002

Disputes – international: Boundary agreement was signed and ratified with Oman in 2003 for entire border, including Oman’s Musandam Peninsula and Al Madhah enclaves, but contents of the agreement and detailed maps showing the alignment have not been published; Iran and UAE dispute Tunb Islands and Abu Musa Island, which Iran occupies.

Arab and Muslim womenIssues! Part One

Hasan A. Yahya, Professor of Sociology

There are certain points related to Arab and Muslim women. In this part we cover three of them, in part two, however, five other points will be covered.

1. Cruel Punishment: Some readers believe that there is no reason to shoot someone in the head six times, and to dagger someone’s neck till his head falls off his body. This is cruel act. It’s no reason to take someone’s life away. But can they ask the same in western societies? They usually have Gas killing, and in the old west, hanging was executed for stealing a horse. It is a fact that a husband surely must have two-to- four wives, or was indeed going to have two-to-four wives. Unmarried couple will be flogged 100 times, male or female, Both will get the same penalty. If they chose to keep quiet, asking the forgiveness from the Lord Himself, He is All Forgiving. The authorities in this case, will not know and the punishment will not be carried out. It is all covered and secretly done. It is the duty of the authorities to carry out the punishment if they knew. Now that being said….Islamic laws has always been fair for many ages. It is the society and the interpretation of Islamic law by the government of the country that made it harsh, it may be cultural matter rather than Islamic law. One must understand Saudis way of enforcing their Islamic laws or cultural ones, which I feel is more traditional than the real embodiment of Islamic spirit. Many people think that was right. If a woman or a man committed adultery. She/he betrayed their family. And in case they are married they, in fact betrayed the institution of marriage. Men are responsible too: There are always two to commit adultery. Some people trying to say that women make men do things against their will and seduce them when they want? Are men bunch of sheep without their own will who do whatever women want? Are men weaklings incapable to control their lust and urges? That way of thinking reminds me of one of the Australian Muslim mullahs who said women are guilty of being raped because they are not covered from head to toe. Did he want to tell us that if men sees a woman that is not veiled they can’t control themselves? What type of men are these men? Adultery is committed in all societies, and the right of women to say no for sexual intercourse, in many societies is punishable by law. The American society is a good example, look at university research data on rape and women abuse. In terms of men are more responsible for adultery, boys probably fall in love just like a girl does. And they probably seduced girls as much as girls seduced boys and probably even more, because an Arab or non Arab girl, a Saudi or Qatari woman is raised not to show initiative and to do what men tell her to do. No one may conclude that adultery was a woman’s fault only? Unless was like the Mullah of Australia. And that a man couldn’t choose to walk away and chooses to commit adultery as much as she did. God gave us free will to do what is right. Why do people blame other people for their decisions? Women sometimes are at least faithful to her feelings and nature. The writer might not like to praise what a man or woman does (In adultery) but he admires a girl’s courage to be true to herself and accept the cultural punishment according to the Law. Everyone I believe, is responsible for their own actions, and women alone are not to blame for men’s emotions.

2. Accusations of Arab Societies: Some people accuse Arab women (especially in the Gulf Arab societies) for looking to as low as their drivers for sex? And ask Why this so? Then they give an answer to their question: It’s because their men marry twice or thrice, and at some point one of the wives is always ignored. What do you expect her to do? An answer for this would be that Qatari, Saudi, or else, women do not sleep with as low as their drivers. This is absurd! There is no truth behind this. Claiming the opposite would be heresy and presumptions which, even if it was true does not constitute the majority nor do they alter the real truth. The writer spent a large proportion of his life in the Arab and Muslim world and he still reluctant to pin point a particular issue at its place. Claimers of these accusations of Qatari women, have to live longer and be with them and think like them to understand their issues. No one can just “cut and paste” their ideas for the public, who no little about Arab and Muslim culture. About polygamy, defenders of Arab women, in fact, say that many husbands [majority in each society] had only one wife. And most those who are polygamous are living in law illiteracy rate traditional communities. The writer has only one wife.

3. Islam and Adultery: The entire system in Islam should be re-done. Many people claim that, but for themselves, and later they act as others. Adultery is a larger question in Islam. Whether a woman willed herself to fall in love or whether she was helpless. Maybe she never loved her husband. But that’s not important here. I think any state which kills for adultery has got some issues it needs to deal with in terms of human rights practiced in the western world [Europe and USA, Canada, etc.,]. Those claims that there should be no such thing as adultery. Reason for that is that no one can control the heart. No one prevent falling in love anytime with anyone. In all cases, it doesn’t matter of your marital status or seeing someone especially when someone is not happy. Life goes on, but some women do not like such life without love and respect. Some may ask: Why should they shoot an adulterer six times in the head? Talking about the men can have more than one wife, it is allowed only if they can be fair, it is not even encouraged in Islam. Most Muslim men abuse their women. Control them in authoritative way. But this phenomenon is decreasing by time. (1101 words)

Property in Dubai, Abu Dhabi – Guide to Buying Property in the United Arab Emirates

In recent years, the government of Dubai has reformed the property laws in that country. Through this reformation process, more and more people have found that buying residential real estate and investment real estate in that country is ever more attractive.

Historically, many foreign nationals were reluctant to invest in real estate in Dubai because there was a great deal of uncertainty as to exactly what type of real estate interest a person could actually obtain by investing in real estate in that country. Specifically, the most desired type of interest in real estate is what is known as a freehold estate. Legally speaking, in Dubai and in other countries the world over, a freehold estate is one in which a person has an absolute interest in a piece of real estate and can convey that real estate to any other person or entity without any encumbrances to such a conveyance. It is the state in which a person has an absolute ownership interest in a piece of real estate.

Investment Property in United Arab Emirates – Dubai

Far and above, the most common type of real estate purchase that foreign nationals are making in Dubai involves investment real estate. In recent years, the government of Dubai has made a concerted effort to draw more foreign investment into that country than at any other time in the history of Dubai.

By way of example, a significant number of foreign nationals have invested in business and commercial property within Dubai. More often than not, a group of foreign investors tend to come together to invest in a particular commercial property in order to spread the risk a bit. Even though Dubai is one of the more stable countries within that particular region of the world, the Middle East remains something or a powder keg and the future stability of the region is always a concern.

Residential Property in United Arab Emirates – Dubai

The demand by foreign nationals for single family dwellings historically has been nominal. However, in the past decade, the number of people from different nations who can be found seeking single family dwellings in Dubai has increased by nearly 100%. There are two primary reasons why more foreign nationals have become interested in single family dwellings within Dubai.

First, with Dubai and its government becoming more interested in playing a larger role on the world’s economic stage, there has been something of a concerted effort at attracting foreign business enterprises to that country. As a result, there are more foreign nationals who have elected to purchase real estate in that country for residential purposes.

Secondly, throughout much of the Arab world and into Europe and Africa, a growing number of people from these other nations have begun to look toward Dubai as a place to maintain vacation or holiday property. More and more people have elected to make the purchase of second residence in Dubai for vacation and holiday purposes.

Residential Real Estate – Apartments in United Arab Emirates – Dubai

As mentioned previously, due to the influx of foreign nationals into Dubai over the course of the past decade, the demand for residential property is on the increase. Many foreign nationals have turned to purchasing and owing apartments for residential purposes.

Generally speaking, even rather luxurious apartments can be purchased in Dubai for comparatively reasonably prices. For example, a person generally can make the purchase of an apartment in Dubai that would cost considerably more for a comparable unit in many other countries around the world .

Holiday Property in UAE Holiday Resorts

As referenced previously, a growing number of people have begun buying and owing vacation property within Dubai. This includes foreign nationals who are turning to Dubai as a place to travel to for vacation or holiday purposes.

Because Dubai is one of the most stable nations in all of the Arab world, many more well to do people from other nations in the region are turning to Dubai as a location in which they can own second or vacation residences. In addition, a growing number of Europeans are also taking to purchasing vacation properties within Dubai. The trend towards the ownership of vacation property by foreign nationals in Dubai is expected to increase over the course of the next two decades, according to real estate analysts who have spend a great deal of time considering real property trends in Dubai.

Specific Steps to Buying a Property in United Arab Emirates – Dubai

Since the 1940s, most foreign nationals who had an inclination to purchase real estate abroad have shied away from buying such property in any of the countries in the Arab world. There are two primary reasons why so many foreign nationals historically have avoided buying real estate in Arab countries, including in Dubai.

First of all, as news reports have recounted over the course of the past sixty years, the Arab world is far from being the most stable region in the country. Wars and violence have been common occurrences within that corner of the world.

The second reason why so many foreign nationals have avoided buying and owning real estate in the Arab world rests in the fact that the laws governing the ownership of real estate in many of these countries has been complicated and structured in such a way that it overtly discouraged foreign investment in real estate. Indeed, many countries that make up the Arab world have prohibited foreign ownership of real estate during much of the past fifty to sixty years — including to the present day.

With all of that said, Dubai has been on the vanguard of creating foreign-friendly real estate laws that encourage the investment in real estate by foreign nationals. First and foremost, the laws in Dubai have been reformed to make it abundantly clear that a foreign national can purchase and own outright real estate within that country. A foreign national can obtain a freehold interest (as has been discussed previously) in real estate in Dubai.

In Dubai, the first step in buying real estate is an oral offer to a seller. In Dubai, a foreign national needs no special permission to make the purchase of real estate in that country. In addition, unlike some countries (including some in the Middle East region of the world), a foreign national can own real estate directly and does not have to bounce through an extra set of hoops towards the goal of buying and holding real property.

Following the acceptance of the oral offer, an initial real estate sales contract is drafted and executed between the parties. A deposit — in an amount negotiated by the parties — is placed at this time by the buyer to the seller. Generally speaking, the deposit is not refundable unless the seller of the property is unable to convey ultimately the real estate to the buyer. In other words, barring some snafu by the seller, a buyer will lose his or her deposit if he or she backs out of the contract.

In Dubai, a mortgage lender from nearly any country in the world can provide financing for the purchase of real estate in that country. What one needs to bear in mind when buying property in Dubai is that many times a lender will require collateral beyond the property located in Dubai, beyond the real estate being purchased. In most real estate transactions the world over, the only collateral the lender requires for a mortgage loan is the real estate itself that is buying purchased. However, when a foreign national is making the purchase of real estate in Dubai, a mortgage lender in most instances will require collateral beyond the actual real estate situated in Dubai that is being purchased.

The primary reasons for the requirement for additional collateral when obtaining a loan to purchase real estate in Dubai include the general instability in the region. There is a concern on the part of some mortgage lenders that something might cause a disruption in Dubai that might effect the real estate collateral in that country. Thus, the typical lender will want additional collateral for any loan. Additionally, while the real estate related laws in Dubai are very liberal, there is always some concern that a new regime might take control of the country causing a disfavor able alteration in the real estate laws in that country. Again, for that reason, lenders desire additional protective collateral in regard to the purchase of real estate in Dubai.

With this in mind, when purchasing real estate in Dubai, it is imperative that a potential purchaser makes certain that he or she has access to other property that can be used as additional collateral for the purchase or real estate in that nation.

Once the various requirements of the initial contract are satisfied — the buyer obtaining financing, the seller making certain that the property is free of any encumbrances that might prevent a conveyance to the buyer — a final contract is executed, the remaining money due to the seller is paid and a deed for the property is given to the buyer who will become the new owner of the real estate at that juncture.

Property Abroad always recommends using a Solicitor or Lawyer.

The Quran declares that King Solomon who knew many languages. King Solomon knew the language of the ants and the birds. He spoke to the Hoopoe and the Hoopoe spoke to him!

The Queen of Sheba (Yemen) read the letter of King Solomon and she understood it, certainly it was in Arabic! The Queen’s messengers talked to King Solomon in Arabic, and He replied in Arabic too.

The Queen met King Solomon personally and they talked to each other, certainly in Arabic!

Moreover, King Solomon knew the language of the Jinn.

On the other hand, these facts are not mentioned in the Bible.

King Solomon knew the language of the ants.

(Read my article: Not in Bible but in Quran (8); King Solomon Hears the Speech of the Ants)

Surah (Chapter) 27:18-19

18] Till, when they came (King Solomon and his unique Hosts) to the valley of the ants, one of the ants said: ‘ o ye ants, go into your dwellings lest Solomon and hosts crush you (under foot) while they do not know. ‘

19] He (King Solomon) smiled, and laughed at its words, and said: ‘ o my lord! Grant me that I should be grateful for your blessing with which you have blessed me and my parents, and that I may work the righteousness that will please you: and admit me, by your grace, to the ranks of your righteous servants.”

King Solomon knew the language of the birds.

(Read my article: Not in Bible but in Quran (6); King Solomon’s Unique Languages).

Surah (Chapter) 27:16

16] “And Solomon was David’s heir. He said: “o ye people! We have been taught the speech of birds and on us has been bestowed (a little) of all things: this is indeed grace manifest (from Allah.)”

King Solomon spoke to the Hoopoe and the Hoopoe spoke to him!

(Read my article: Not in Bible but in Quran (11); King Solomon and His Unique Hoopoe).

Surah (Chapter) 27:20-28

22] He (the Hoopoe) was not long in coming, and said: ‘I know what you do not know. I come to you from Sheba (Yemen today) with certain news and sure tidings.

23] There I found a woman ruling over them. And she is provided with every requisite; and she has a magnificent throne (said the Hoopoe).

24] But she and her people prostrate to the sun instead of Allah. And Satan has made their deeds seem pleasing to them and barred them from the path, and therefore they are not guided (said the Hoopoe).

25] Do they not prostrate themselves to Allah who brings forth all that is concealed in the heavens and earth and he knows what they hide and what they reveal? (said the Hoopoe).

26] But he: he is Allah, there is no god but he: he is the lord of the mighty throne’ (said the Hoopoe).

27] (Solomon) said: ‘we shall see if what you have said is true or whether you are among those who lie.

28] Go with this my letter and throw it down unto them; then turn aside and (wait to) see what answer they return,

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -

King Solomon Spoke Arabic

King Solomon sent a letter to the Queen of Sheba (Yemen), she read it, understood it and she sent messengers to King Solomon and she met him personally. She and her messengers spoke Arabic and of course King Solomon communicated with them in Arabic!

(Read my articles: Not in Bible but in Quran (12); King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba and Not in Bible but in Quran (14); King Solomon’s Castle and the Second Surprise!)

The Queen of Sheba (Yemen) read the letter of King Solomon and she understood it, certainly it was in Arabic!

Surah (Chapter) 27:29-30

29] She (the queen of Sheba) said: ‘o council, look, an honorable letter has been dropped to me.

30] Lo! It is from Solomon and it is “in the name of Allah, the merciful, the most merciful.”

31] “Exalt not yourselves against me and come to me (in surrender) in submission (to the true religion).’”

The Queen’s messengers talked to King Solomon in Arabic, and He replied in Arabic too.

Surah (Chapter) 27:35-37

35] But lo! I am going to send him a present, and (wait) to see with what (answer) my messengers return.

36] Now when (the envoy) came to Solomon, he said: “what! Would ye help me with wealth? Will ye give me abundance in wealth? But that which Allah has given me is better than that which he has given you! Nay it is ye who exult and rejoice in your gift!

37] “go back to them, and be sure we shall come to them with such hosts as they will never be able to meet: we shall expel them from there in disgrace, and they will feel humbled and shall be in a state of ignominy (indeed).”

The Queen met King Solomon personally and they talked to each other, certainly in Arabic!

Surah (Chapter) 27:44

44] It was said to her: enter the lofty palace (the castle): but when she saw it, she thought it was a lake of water or a pool of water, and she (tucked up her skirts), and bared her legs. he said: “this is but a palace paved smooth with slabs of glass.” she said: “o my lord! I have indeed wronged my soul: I do (now) submit to Allah (in Islam), with Solomon, to the lord of the worlds.”

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -

Moreover, King Solomon knew the language of the Jinn. (Read my article: Not in Bible but in Quran (13); King Solomon’s Companion and the First Surprise!)

Surah (Chapter) 27:39

39] A brave Efreet (an extremely strong jinni) among the jinn replied: ‘I will bring it to you before you rise from your council; indeed I have the strength for the purpose and am trustworthy.

=========

It is amazing that the Quran declares all of these facts about King Solomon who knew many languages including the Arabic. On the other hand, such facts are not mentioned in the Bible.

=========

Back to the main issue of my series of articles; this is my question to you smart readers: “Is the Quran quoted from the Bible?”

By the way, the disbelieved ignorant Arabs stated that the Quran quoted from the Bible more than 1400 years ago! (Read my article about chapter 25).

Article 3:1 – So, You Want To Learn Arabic? Read This!

Do you have any idea how many different languages and dialects there are in the world? Well, if you don’t, you sure picked one of the more fascinating ones by wanting to learn Arabic.

People learn Arabic for a variety of reasons: for work, for travel, for religious purposes, because of marriage or friendship with an Arab, or simply as a hobby. The motivation to some extent determines the most appropriate learning method.

Whatever your motive, we suggest you try to learn a little Arabic at home before committing yourself to more serious (and possibly expensive) study of it. At the very least, this will give you an idea of what’s involved and give you extra confidence during the early stages of any course you may take later.

The first thing to decide is whether you want to learn standard/classical Arabic or a colloquial dialect.

The one good thing about Arabic, unlike Hebrew, is that it is written from left to right just like the Latin alphabet. So in this respect, you at least have some ties to your normal course of reading, unless of course you grew up in a Hebrew home. Then you’ve really got your work cut out for you.

Unless your interest is confined to one particular country, the safest option is to learn a version of the classical language known as Modern Standard Arabic. This is what is used in books, newspapers, radio and television news program, political speeches, etc.

If you check out the link in my signature, you’ll find a review of a great resource for learning to speak and read Arabic. I think you’ll find it quite helpful.

International TV News – The Way Forward

Edward Victor and Sarah Smith interview award-winning CNN, BBC and Al Jazeera journalist, Afshin Rattansi, about newsgathering and his novel, “The Dream of the Decade – The London Novels” published by Booksurge and available on Amazon.com.

Edward Victor: Afshin Rattansi, your new book looks at -among other things- the way news is made in newsrooms. Given that you have worked at three top networks, the BBC, CNN and Al Jazeera, do you think there has been any change since you wrote your book?

Afshin Rattansi: A character in the third novel of the quartet reappears to work at a large media organization around the time of the war on Yugoslavia. That war was covered in an extraordinary way and was widely criticised afterwards. After all, reporting on hundreds of thousands of people dying in the heart of Europe is what journalism textbooks after World War II were written for and yet, anyone using TV news to find out what happened in Sarajevo would have been confused at best. It was only after the war that some excellent programmes were made.

“The Dream of the Decade” deals with unwitting bias or unwitting lack of balance. Every story was nuanced by the life experiences of the kind of people that get the jobs in newsrooms. Though the book deals with coverage of stories on the environment, healthcare and many other issues, the in-built bias of journalists reaches its apotheosis with regard to war reporting. Whether it be the wars on Latin American states in the 1980s or the war on Yugoslavia in the 1990s, it’s remarkable how hard it is for a viewer to hear a spectrum of views on any war.

Edward Victor: You also started the developing world’s first English language 24 hour satellite TV news and current affairs network, based in the Middle East. As the man in charge, did you use your experience to produce news differently?

Afshin Rattansi: I hope so. Though I was the editor of the channel, there were the constraints any manager would have on the way we broadcast news. Most recently, at the BBC, one realised the constraints on a very well established network when reporting the run-up to the war on Iraq. At the Dubai Channel, we came from a developing world perspective and concentrated on the financial background. “Follow the money” was the watchword when we covered, say the Ethiopia-Eritrea war or the privatisation of natural resource management demanded by the IMF. I always thought it was interesting that Business Week outsold The Economist and that Business Week magazine was often the best source for really getting a balanced view of a story. Everything from the most local – for example, food resources or crime prevention – to the most global – say, Kyoto, the drug trade or nuclear arms – usually has private profit at the heart of it.

Whether it be Hollywood or the matter of Palestine, following the money is a pretty good way for journalists to cover a story…and being very wary of Microsoft’s “copy and paste” functions when allied to Reuters and AP wire stories. Reuters, after all, is mainly a financial services company and though it has excellent journalists, their “daily wraps” of the main stories of the day will not be those that most concern ordinary people, certainly not the greatest proportion of humanity or the greatest audience.

Sarah Smith: Al Jazeera is launching an English language station. The expert on Al Jazeera, Hugh Miles, wrote about (in Al Jazeera : How Arab TV News Challenges America) how the Arabic language station hired you -as an award-winning journalist- once the channel became more successful and wanted to raise its profile. Will you be working for the English language station?

Afshin Rattansi: I certainly haven’t been approached. And whilst I think it has the potential to be something great – even building on the work that developing world international stations have been making since the Dubai Channel – I’m as yet unsure of the direction the channel is taking. They’ve taken on some excellent personnel. I think what will be critical – not only for sound editorial reasons – will be whether they can carve a niche that separates them from industry leaders such as CNN, the BBC and Fox. There are a lot of free-to-air international TV stations, now. But Al Jazeera Arabic was different because its perspective was shared by a swathe of people from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean that just wasn’t compatible with the big corporate names in news.

Sarah Smith: But why have you not wanted to be part of such an exciting project – given your published work on managing start-up TV stations, getting cable access, writing remits and so forth? You were, after all, the first ever English-language recruit to Al Jazeera.

Afshin Rattansi: So far, I’ve already been told that there is no place for me on the network so, obviously, they’ve missed something very important in the start-up of the new channel! But, more seriously, it has to be said that within the industry, there are some great journalists who, I would have thought, would have been ideal recruits. International TV station start-ups are always complex and perhaps management of the new station has a long range plan that involves more commercial BBC-style news at the beginning to gain market access. My first boss at the BBC, Paul Gibbs, is one of the directors of the new channel so I know that they have some heavyweights when it comes to knowing the industry. He will be commissioning programmes and at the BBC Business Unit was known for innovative strands of programming.

Sarah Smith: The channel has hired some journalists very much from the neoliberal right. David Frost who is a friend of Israel even checked with the U.S. and UK governments before he would take on a job at the station. Their head of news, Steve Clark, produced extremely right wing programmes that were pro-Israeli. Do you have any fears about the channel?

Afshin Rattansi: As I said, start-ups are always quite fraught. And one must remember that there are a lot of people who are willing the failure of Al Jazeera International. I know Steve and he seemed relatively sane! I certainly don’t think it can be said – as some are alleging – that the English language station has been hijacked by the CIA or something, as some are having it.

As to the more disturbing bits of news we get about the start-up of the English language Al Jazeera channel, I think we should wait and see. Frost is a big name and TV stations do need stars. With all the money being thrown at the new channel, let’s hope that they are getting the really top notch producers and reporters and not those who are merely the dregs of big, corporate news broadcasting, looking for a tax-free salary and a bit of sun!

Edward Victor: The book that concerns TV news in “The Dream of the Decade” has been compared to Evelyn Waugh’s “Scoop”. Should it be read as a satire or did any of the things in the book actually happen.

Afshin Rattansi: Of all the books in the quartet, perhaps that one, “Good Morning, Britain” is the most autobiographical. Alas, some of the crazier things regarding the naivety of reporters are basically true. I certainly remember a very posh reporter who was unaware of public healthcare and when he went to cover a story about hospitals went to the only hospital he knew – a very expensive private one – so that the whole report became an advert for how wonderful medical care was in the UK. I’ve also met my fair share of war correspondents who delight in the perceived Hemmingway persona, obscuring the issues of geopolitical power in any theatre of war.

Sarah Smith: What broadcast news services do you think are good and how can journalism in general get better?

Afshin Rattansi: I think there are some gold standards at the moment. One of them is BBC World Service radio which whilst showing little in the way of innovation and often obscuring power-lines, still manages to feel truly global. Obviously, CNN when my little brother
is anchoring is also excellent! I have to admit that Fox News, which is doing well in the ratings, at least puts its heart on its sleeve – tacitly admitting it has an angle. It is much more frightening to watch news which suggests that it is unbiased when it is.

Ultimately, it will be up to the kind of people employed in journalism. At the BBC Today programme – shortly before the editor was fired – there were the beginnings of a recruitment process that was genuinely based on grouping people from different backgrounds to be in the newsroom. In Dubai, there were journalists from every country East and South of Algiers. But it’s not just ethnic diversity, it’s class diversity. You wouldn’t find many frontline journalists at the BBC from London’s Peckham area, nor at CNN from Dixie Hills. Ironically, the ratings on programmes which employed them would do well as so little on TV reflects the aspirations and concerns of the majority. However, I don’t think advertisers are that interested in those with low disposable incomes. And, in the UK, which has weathered the dumbing down of international TV better than most places, executives at government-funded stations feel the need – for complex reasons – to compete with commercial content.

Arab and Muslim women Issues! Part Two

Hasan A. Yahya, Professor of Sociology

There are certain points related to Arab and Muslim women. We covered three of these points in previous article, here are the rest examples:

4. Parenting In the Arab and Muslim world: In the Parenting an Arab and Muslim girl, parents give girls everything they wanted. They treat them sincerely and kindly. And when they were at the right age, the family chose a good husband for her, in what called in sociology, arranged marriages which is popular in the Arab and Muslim world. a good man, the family knows. But some young ladies had ideas of their own. Therefore, they rebelled. They have choices: one is to refuse the proposed person. And deny fulfilling the marriage contract. Or for other reason such as going to complete their education at the university, in local or far communities. May be other countries differ from the place of origin. If they are married, they usually did not love the selected husband who was forced on her at the beginning. In Saudi Arabia, and many other Muslim and Arab countries, woman still should not be allowed to raise her voice. They call it “Awrah”, a “shameful act” by women to raise their voice when men are present. A woman is considered of a “lower, inferior sex” by choice, some say, because the Islamic culture promotes certain ethics in terms of women behavior. That she should not act like a man. The man is the master, or the over hand in marriage or in the family, a young brother can control his elder sister, this is common in Arab and Muslim countries. As she’s the wife, not the slave as some people like to say. Soon after a woman marriage she usually live in the extended family, but these days the newly married couple have their own house. They may leave to other community as we said, and fell in love in that different environment. No girl or boy may fall in love “deliberately.” Even a veiled woman, but women usually conceal their love from family. It is sometimes told to close female friends. Lover in Arab and Muslim world become in danger position, some people consider love as illegal and forbidden. But lovers may die for their love. They may sacrifice themselves for the lover safety.

5. Islam, Divorce, and Human Rights: Does Islam allow divorce, equal rights for the women and men? For any reason at all!! Well, the habits vary from one place to another. That’s why adultery for married or spouse is punishable by death. But under certain circumstances, for example, if she or he confessed or 4 male witnesses witnessing penetration (actual sexual act-as explained in the text). Still in some close societies cultures press the fact of protecting honor of the girl. In some cases, in Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Kuwait, and many other communities the father or elder brother takes charge to kill the girl. The culture usually sympathizes with honor offenders, and sometimes the court itself, give less penalty in these cases. Many women feel that this is absurd ruling, and should not be practiced. And human rights have to be preserved for both men and women.

6. Arranged marriages for some critics are absolutely silly to hear about , the argument that a woman committed adultery, because she was not asked who she wanted as a husband In Islamic lands where the woman cannot even decide that, and consider that act as ridiculous to even mention it. They think of that as an Islamic Virus to be fought. But to eradicate such practice and to give valid assumptions, women today, in the crowded and high density cities, women do not marry by traditional arrangement. This habit is decreasing rapidly. The opposite of this image, is far from true.

7. Stories of horror: It is all over in the news, until very recently we have no law that would protect a husband who murdered his wife and her lover when he found them in flagrant delicate situation. There is not so terribly much difference between Western and Middle Eastern cultures on this point, really. I feel sorry when I hear such stories against young couple, but they, just like us, live in a society of laws and knew what the laws were to be followed and obeyed. Penalties for crimes is simply understood, but sacrificed sometimes by emotional mis-control.

8. Religious or Cultural Practices: No government or official law on human rights are respected or secured in love cases leads to adultery in the Arab and Muslim world. So it might be excusable for ancient people to act like as they did. Love is blind as they say, but temptations to commit adultery is punishable. Old storis of Romeo and Juliet, Antar and Abla, Qays and Laila, many centuries old stories of history these days. In the modern world with a high tech civilization, and interaction through media and education and cultural diffusion, it is not excusable to do it according to Arabic and Islamic ethics. A Saudi man do not allow women to have a freedom, negates cultural norms. Some women’s activists call for women in Saudi Arabia the right to drive their cars alone. What do you expect from a culture respects honor and perceive women as weak persons, need always men or familial protection? In Saudi Arabia, if a woman is not allowed to drive, or to vote, or to go outside alone, or to talk with unrelated men and etc, it does not mean that they prohibit them from loving each other, no one can stand in the face of love, because love is incited by God, and God makes people love each other, but when love became illegal love, negate cultural norms, then killing people who love each other and committed adultery is suitable punishment, culturally. There is no dating as Americans way of life. These adultery activities are prohibited in both Arab and Islamic countries. Saudi like to watch the execution of such penalties, they often come from far away just for seeing these acts. In these days, westerners do not admit such acts and describe them as just uneducated savages actions against human rights, but not modern people who call themselves Muslims their families appreciate such acts. (1084 words)

Dr. Hasan Yahya is a professor of Sociology, and columnist at wfol.tv Malaysia and TINA International News Agency, Chicago, USA. www.hasanyahya.com

Congress passed a bill to label certain Middle Eastern satellite providers of ‘anti-American’ programming as terrorist organizations, in an effort to prevent radical anti-American propaganda from hitting the airwaves. This goes completely against the US tradition of promoting freedom of the press abroad and is flawed for many reasons – plus it will lead to more censorship of Arab media.

I am not a Jew! I am an Arab, Palestinian, and Muslim! Why Media Bother to Invite Me?

Hasan Yahya, Ph.D

A friend of mine, asked me the other day a very tempting question: why the media Dr. Yahya do not invite you for an interview, or talk show? After all these books and articles you published? Well, I said: how can you expect from the media to call me for interview? Firstly, I am not a Jew to be invited to ALL TV shows. Secondly, I am a damn Arab, thirdly, I am a damn Palestinian, and fourthly, it is worst of all, I am a [….] Muslim!

With all these stigmas in modern America, you should not ask such a question. If you are the president of a network, would you invite me to talk about victims of the holocaust who are killing Palestinians on daily basis? And who are making Palestinian life horrible? Demolish their houses, and kill innocent people, and constructed over than 600 checkpoints as if it is Nazi camp, in apartheid South Africa before freedom emancipation. They claim to secure their occupied land. But I think to cover their frear, and cowardice. But they deny that on everyday basis. They also say: To talk that way about Jews of Israel, is anti-Semitism. In America there are two perceived facts: Jews are not colonizers which I am negating. The second is that the American media is free and unbiased (Owners or otherwise) and have the ability to run the banks, the newspapers, Hollywood in America. And that anti-semitism is gaining ground in the mainstream Americans too. Which also I am negating without evidence.

Furthermore, I told my American friend: American media is owned mostly by Jews. I recently have these information about Jews Media control mostly obtained from realjewnews website and wikipedia, and other sites. For example:

Rupert Murdoch: His mother is a Jew, and he owns Fox Television, TV Guide, Twentieth Century Fox Studio, Wall Street Journal, New York Post, and The London Times. Murray Rothstein: AKA “Sumner Redstone.” Owner of CBS, MTV, LOGO, (Homosexual TV), Blockbuster Videos, Paramount & DreamWorks Movie studios. Peter Chernin: New York born Jew. CEO of Murdoch’s News Corporation & Corporate Director for American Express. Edgar Bronfman Jr: Principal holder of Time-Warner Corporation. Media venues include NBC Television, Turner Broadcasting, CNN, Warner/Chappell Music, AOL, & Time Magazine . Jeff Zucker: President and CEO of NBC Television. Michael Eisner: Former CEO of Walt Disney Company. Principal holder of Capital Cites which owns ABC Television. Present owner of The Tornante Company which develops companies in the Media sector. Mortimer Zuckerman: Owner of US News & World Report and the New York Daily. Donald E Graham: CEO & Chairman of the Board of the Washington Post which owns Newsweek Magazine. He is the son of Katherine Meyer Graham, whose father, Eugene Meyer, a wealthy Jewish financier, purchased the Washington Post in 1933. Donald E Graham now oversees the Washington Post operation.

Realjewsnews, in fact shows that Jews Promote The So-Called War On Terror: and control America’s Foreign Policy through the Jewish Lobby by the Jewish Media whose executives attend the same synagogues & country clubs as the Jewish Lobby leaders. They also Promote Pornography, Homosexuality, & Lesbianism: realjews claims that jews have their Media control to destroying Christian morality & consciousness in America. Thus they gain control over the subverted masses. Furthermore, according to the same site: realjewsnews, Jews promote Political Candidates Who Support Zionism: in which A perfect example of this is the Jewish Media’s blackout of Presidential candidate Ron Paul who spoke against military & financial aid to Israel. And finally, he accused jews for promoting Violence through their Media-control wish to create a disordered society so as to dominate the masses through their highly-organized and monolithic institutions.

After all these giants of American media you asked: why the American media did not invite me? I think I don’t want to be famous. Period. Have you heard that the Saudi Prince al-Waleed bin Talal has any share in such media? Of course he has several channels, in Arabic language, cover the Middle East, but Arabs still naive to think properly and learn from the jews strategies and tactics. By the way, in the Arab countries, leaders remain in the top of government more than 30, 40, or 50 years, who counts? unless they are killed by relatives or thrown out of monarchy. They in fact stay on the top of their governments until they die. Some of the leaders should enter the book of Gennis book of records for that amazing quality. I think if Phyllis Chesler, the Jewish fiminist read this, she will add to her judgment that all Muslims are like their leaders and that Islam provide safe net for the Arab leaders in this case. Because in her writings she’s famous to use generalization of judgment about personal experiences to all religion followers, and religion itself. Unless she talks about Afghans according to her awful experience. (861 words)
